Donald F. Gavalis, 88, a resident of the Gino J. Merli Veterans Center, passed on January 31, 2021 at Geisinger Community Medical Center from COVID-19 complications. Born November 25, 1932 in Scranton, Donald was the son of the late Frank and Mary Dukauskas Gavalis. He was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School, a Navy Veteran of the Korean War having served 2 years and 7 months in sea service, and retired as a produce manager for the Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, (A&P grocery chain). Donald was a loving father and grandfather who enjoyed his daily talks with his children and watching FOX news. Before his time at Gino Merli, Donald loved taking trips to Atlantic City and Mohegan Sun. He is survived by his daughter, Donna Gavalis of Dunmore, two sons, Michael Gavalis and wife, Margaret of Jermyn, and David Gavalis of Scranton. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Michael Jr. and Elizabeth Gavalis, numerous nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by a sister, Constance Sachs. The family would like to thank all the staff members at Gino J. Merli Veterans Center for all the care and comfort that they have provided the past 8 years.
