James P. McGreevy

James P. “Pinky” McGreevy, of Scranton, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, at Regional Hospital of Scranton.

Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late James J. and Alice Blasko McGreevy. He was preceded in death by the love of his life and beloved wife, Helen Roginski McGreevy, with whom he shared a lifetime of love and devotion.

James was a 1967 graduate of Scranton Technical High School. He dedicated 38 years of his life to the ironworking trade, proudly working as an ironworker and later as a foreman with Hospador Steel Erectors, Inc., Saint Clair, and Standard Iron Works, Scranton. A loyal member of Ironworkers Local 489, James believed in the value of honest, hard work. Throughout his life, he found great satisfaction in pointing out the many buildings and structures he helped erect—a lasting testament to the craftsmanship and pride he brought to every job.

He is survived by his daughters, Judy McGreevy and her wife, Kathleen Wheeler, both of Scranton, and Jennifer Jezorwski and her husband, Daniel, of Scranton; his son, Ronn McGreevy Smith, of Scranton; his five cherished grandchildren, Noah, Kylee, Kassidy, Kourtney, and Karys; and his sister, Linda Karluk, of Scranton. In addition to his parents and beloved wife, James was preceded in death by his daughter, Kelly Kate McGreevy, and his siblings, Mary Ellen Gallagher and Michael McGreevy.

To family and friends alike, he was simply “Pinky.” He had a gift for making people feel welcome and formed friendships wherever life took him. While he valued those friendships deeply, nothing brought him greater happiness than being with his family. He was a devoted husband, a loving father, and an immensely proud grandfather.

One of his greatest joys was hearing his youngest granddaughter, Karys, affectionately call him “Grandpa the Greevy.” Those words never failed to bring a smile to his face. It was the simple moments—time spent with those he loved most—that meant everything to him.

Pinky was a man of quiet strength, unwavering loyalty, and a generous heart. He worked hard, loved fiercely, and never hesitated to put his family first. He also enjoyed spending time with his many friends at the VFW Post 3451 on Prospect Avenue in Scranton, where good conversation, laughter, and camaraderie were always part of the day.

Though his hands helped build countless structures throughout Northeastern Pennsylvania, the strongest legacy he leaves behind is, undoubtedly, the family he cherished and the love, kindness, and steadfast example he shared with all who knew him. He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever carried in the hearts of his family and friends.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on Monday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Edward J. Chomko Funeral Home & Cremation Services, LLC, 262 Railroad Avenue, West Scranton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish. Interment will follow at Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Cemetery.
