“Jan the Man,” also lovingly known as “Jan the Handyman”
Jan Richardson, 73, of West Scranton, passed away Wednesday at home, surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his devoted wife, Cynthia Bohn Richardson.
Born in Jersey City, NJ, he was the son of the late Donald T. and Florence Ann Richardson. Jan was a 1970 graduate of West Scranton High School, a faithful member of St. Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church, and proudly self-employed for many years.
Jan was truly a man of many talents — if something needed to be done, he could do it. His hands were rarely still, and his willingness to help others earned him the nickname “Jan the Handyman.” He had a beautiful mind for cars and crafts. He loved to craft and fix broken things. He always looked at something broken and knew he could make it work again. Above all, he was a family man. He filled every room with humor, kindness, and encouraging words. He was always ready to lend a hand to anyone in need.
Jan loved starting his morning with a Pepsi, and one of his favorite hobbies was trains. He would build train models and train tracks along with spending many hours perfecting every detail. His favorite holiday was Christmas. He would decorate the house with lots of Christmas animatronics and lights. He loved old Godzilla movies, watching Miami Dolphin Football, Basketball, Wrestling, and old cartoons. He had a passion for listening to Queen music along with Chicago and the Eagles.
In addition to his beloved wife, Cynthia, he is survived by their children and spouses: Jamie and Christine Richardson; Alicia and Mike Poncheri; Jeremy Richardson; Corey Richardson; Shaun Richardson; Devin and Kara Richardson; Kody and Raeanne Richardson; Trevor Richardson; Tristan and Ally Richardson; and Kimberly Richardson. He is also survived by eight cherished grandchildren; his sister, Robin Ann Richardson of New Jersey; his sister-in-law, Sandy Richardson; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Jeff Richardson.
A Funeral Service will be celebrated Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church, Linden Street at Mifflin Avenue, by Rev. Fr. Roman Vasylynka. Interment will follow at the parish cemetery in Minooka.
Viewing for family and friends will be held Monday from 4 to 7 p.m., with a Panachyda Service beginning at 6:30 p.m., officiated by Rev. Fr. Roman Vasylynka.
