Obituary

Jean E. Murphy, 91, of Thornhurst, passed away Peacefully Monday evening while surrounded by family. She was the widow of Martin L. Murphy Jr. and the daughter of the late Archbald E. Hamilton and Anna Mae Hamilton Beebe. She is survived by two daughters, Ann Marie Murphy and Roxann Murphy, one grandson, Jess Roxby and wife Lacey, five great grandsons, Timothy Roxby, Cody Roxby, Ty Cerino, Tate Roxby, Gage Mettin, one great great-grandson, one great-great granddaughter. Extended family, Irene E. Luebbing, Karyn Kunzig and Karissa Worobey. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Neil Purvis Hamilton. The world has truly lost an amazing woman. Jean served as a Rosie the Riveter during WW II and worked as a seamstress and owned and operated her own hair salon. She loved to sing with her church choir and was a Sunday school teacher at the Thornhurst Methodist Church. She was a past Royal Ranger Commander for church youth at the Peckville Assembly of God and a member of the United Methodist Women. Jean loved watching the Fox news channel, gardening and grew the most beautiful dahlias. She was an avid hunter, fisherwoman, baker and was the scrabble queen. She did not leave without touching the lives of so many with her wisdom, wit, generosity, and her cantankerous ways. Jean opened her heart and home to those who struggled with addiction, in the hope that they would find peace and health. Her spirit will forever be with us. Jean's family cannot thank enough the Mountain View Care Center's entire nursing staff, for giving such excellent care and tending to Jean's needs. She will be deeply and painfully missed, but her spirit will always live on. Memorials can be sent in Jean's name to the United Methodist Church in Thornhurst, or the Scholarship Treatment Fund at the Clearbrook Treatment Center, in Wilkes-Barre.    Private services will be held. Inurnment will be in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. Cremation services entrusted to the Edward J. Chomko Funeral Home & Cremation Services, West Scranton.
