In Loving Memory of Stephon Burgette
Stephon Burgette, a beloved son, father, brother, nephew, uncle, cousin, friend, and respected member of the Lackawanna County and Dunmore community, passed away on October 2, 2026.
Stephon lived a life of service, strength, athleticism, humor, and compassion. A graduate of Scranton High School and Wilkes University, he was an accomplished athlete who played football throughout high school and college. He also had a passion for boxing and pursued a professional boxing career, training extensively and participating in several fights throughout the local area. His athletic accomplishments reflected the determination, discipline, and competitive spirit that were such a strong part of who he was.
From an early age, Stephon demonstrated a desire to help others. He worked with troubled youth and adolescent boys at St. Michael’s School for Boys and developed a lasting commitment to encouraging and supporting young people.
Stephon went on to serve his community as a police officer with the Dunmore Police Department. He also served with the Lackawanna County Drug Task Force and SWAT team, where the bonds of brotherhood and service became an important part of his life. He was highly respected by those who knew him and many people throughout the community.
This past year, Stephon continued his commitment to helping others as a drug and alcohol counselor. Even while carrying his own struggles, he continued to make a difference in the lives of others.
Stephon had an infectious smile, an unforgettable sense of humor, and a personality that drew people toward him. He loved to joke, laugh, and have a good time. He was also the kind of person who would go out of his way to help people in need and genuinely wanted the best for others.
Above all, Stephon was a loving father to his two children, Stefano Burgette and Vita Burgette, who will forever carry his memory in their hearts.
He is survived by his loving mother, Deneen E. Dickens; his siblings, Carlene E. Burgette, Justine E. Sweeting, and Malcolm L. Sweeting; his grandmother, Elizabeth Dickens; his uncle, Chad Waiters; his girlfriend, Lindsey Leppo; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends.
Stephon was preceded in death by his brothers, Brett W. Sweeting II and Christopher Burgette.
This past year, Stephon struggled with depression, particularly after losing the career and brotherhood that had given him such a strong sense of purpose. Although he continued working to help others, he carried a private pain that ultimately became more than he could bear.
His family asks that Stephon not be remembered by the circumstances of his passing, but by the life he lived and the people he helped along the way.
Remember his smile. Remember his laughter. Remember his heart. Remember his service. Remember the lives he touched. Most of all, remember Stephon.
His legacy lives on through his children, his family, his friends, his former colleagues, and the many people who are better because he was a part of their lives. He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.
Friends may pay their respects Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Edward J. Chomko Funeral Home & Cremation Services LLC, 262 Railroad Ave., West Scranton.
