Thomas “Tom” LeBoutillier, 90, of Dunmore, passed away peacefully at Geisinger Community Medical Center.

His wife was the late Ann Cherinka LeBoutillier. Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Carl Preston and Ann Sheridan LeBoutillier. He was educated at West Scranton High School and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He went on to dedicate more than 32 years of his life to his country, retiring from the Marine Corps with the rank of Master Gunnery Sergeant.

During his distinguished military career, Tom served as an infantry unit leader for 15 years and a marksmanship instructor for 17 years. He also served for three years in Vietnam as a scout sniper and was recognized as both an M16 rifle expert and pistol expert. His extensive military training included SWAT instructor school and close-combat pistol courses.

Among his numerous military decorations and commendations were the Navy Commendation Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Presidential Unit Citation, Meritorious Unit Citation, Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal and multiple Good Conduct Medals. During his service in Vietnam, Tom also had the memorable opportunity to meet legendary actor John Wayne during a USO visit. Among the proudest distinctions of his military career was receiving the Bronze Star Medal, which was personally presented and pinned on him by President Lyndon B. Johnson.

He is survived by his daughters, Kathy and Sharon LeBoutillier; his sister, Barbara Van Louvender of New Jersey; his grandson, Michael John LeBoutillier; four great-grandchildren, Michael Thomas, Ryan, Mila and Lana LeBoutillier; and several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Ann Cadden and Marie Armitage.

Family and friends may pay their respects Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Edward J. Chomko Funeral Home & Cremation Services LLC, 262 Railroad Ave., West Scranton.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Ann’s Basilica, with Father Lee as celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Michael’s Cemetery, Dunmore, with military honors rendered by the United States Marine Corps and the Dickson City Veterans Honor Guard.

The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the physicians, nurses and staff of Geisinger Community Medical Center’s ICU, Unit 8, for the compassionate care provided to Tom.

A devoted Marine and proud patriot, Tom will be remembered for a life defined by courage, discipline and an unwavering commitment to service, as well as for the love and devotion he had for his family.
